On March 23, 2021, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that it is extending a special enrollment period through the Exchanges due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As a result, eligible individuals have three additional months, through Aug. 15, 2021, to enroll in Exchange coverage via HealthCare.gov. Originally the extension was scheduled to go through May 15, 2021. Individuals can check their eligibility for the special enrollment period and premium subsidies on HealthCare.gov. The extended enrollment period is a result of the premium cost savings available through the passage of the American Rescue Plan (ARPA). The adjustment may allow one to enroll in a higher-level benefit plan at a lower cost.
