As anticipated, on November 6, 2020, the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, along with the Treasury Department released an interim final rule that will require private health insurers, Medicaid and Medicare to cover the cost of the COVID-19 vaccination once approve by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA).
The interim final rule was a result of the parameters established by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act under which all non-grandfathered health plans and issuers of insurance must operate. Coverage for the COVID-19 vaccine, once available, will be required, without member cost sharing, within 15 business days after the FDA’s usage recommendation notification.
The following Benefits Bulletin provides a high-level overview of the recently released requirement.
